Digital Inclusion
The aim of the Digital Inclusion project was to increase participants knowledge of digital skills through one-to-one or group sessions. The sessions were tailored to their particular needs and interests and we targeted a variety of ages and ethnicities, with a total of 158 people benefitting. Learning took place using smart phones, tablets, laptops and desk top computers and included the use of apps as well as websites. All sessions were held in community venues apart from the walking groups which used outdoor spaces to allow practical use of certain apps.
There were multiple barriers experienced by individuals, for example some did not own a laptop or have a smart phone, others had limited mobile phone data when not using Wi-Fi which impacted on their ability to download apps outside of Wi-Fi hotspots. Some participants were cautious of using email particularly with respect to security and being able to recognise spam emails. Others did not have English as a first language which limited the apps and websites they could access.
The varied needs and interests were reflected in the various achievements of participants. Some had never used a computer so for them simply turning it on and being able to use the mouse and keyboard was a huge achievement. Another participant successfully purchased a new mobile phone online, while others used a walking app to go out and explore some areas of Witton Park together confident in the knowledge that they couldn’t get lost! Supporting people to download and use the NHS app resulted in them being able to quickly order repeat prescriptions and make appointments independently.
